Today, I’m thrilled to take you on an exciting adventure — an account of my incredible journey to the renowned Design Studio. This design powerhouse has been the stuff of dreams for many aspiring creatives, and I’m here to share my personal experience with you.
👩🎓It all started after I completed my engineering degree at Mumbai University. In early 2020, the world was struck by the pandemic, and like countless others, I found myself without a job, uncertain about my future in the corporate realm.
📚During my college days, I always had this desire to master Adobe software, particularly Photoshop. However, the daunting complexity of these tools kept holding me back. But then, the pandemic came along, and with nothing left to lose, I made a bold decision — I would confront my fears and dive headfirst into learning Photoshop. I enrolled in a graphic design course offered by CalArts, and that’s when my thrilling journey into the world of graphic design began.
👩💻Upon completing the course, armed with a newfound sense of confidence, I decided to put my creativity to the test with Photoshop. Now, I must admit, my first design was an absolute mess. But that didn’t discourage me one bit. I was determined to create another design, and another, and another, until I felt somewhat satisfied. Even though my early designs weren’t perfect, the sheer joy of conquering my fear of Photoshop far outweighed any flaws in my creations.
💻While my classmates and friends were already venturing into the corporate world, I found myself still searching for my true career path. While coding had its merits, it never ignited the same passion in me as design did. Uncertain about my future job prospects, I decided to give design a shot and began exploring graphic design internships.
✏️My first stint was with a seed-stage startup founded by two enterprising individuals from IIT Kharagpur during their third year of engineering. This company specialized in stationary products, particularly designing greeting cards and wedding invitations. As their graphic designer, I worked on designing cards and invites for a modest monthly stipend of Rs. 3000. During one of our team meetings, I overheard the founders discussing the need for a UI/UX designer to revamp their website. Ever the eager learner, I couldn’t resist asking if I could take on that responsibility. To my delight, they gladly entrusted me with the task, impressed by my previous work.
🎯While my peers were earning significant salaries, I continued doing internships with minimal pay. During this time, my focus shifted from making money to building a remarkable portfolio and honing my skills. I worked with startups of all sizes, trying to grasp the intricacies of team dynamics and how design processes impact users. I even took on freelance projects, accepting minimum payment, to experience the difference between working collaboratively and individually.
💪As I delved deeper into product design, constantly improving my skills and expanding my portfolio, I mustered the courage to apply to the LOLLYPOP design studio. However, as fate would have it, my first attempts were met with rejection. But I refused to let this setback deter me. Instead, I saw it as an opportunity to grow and evolve further.
😇Months later, I mustered the courage to reapply to Lollypop Studio, though I fully expected another rejection. But to my sheer delight, one fine day, I received a phone call from Pushpa, the HR representative at Lollypop Studio. My heart soared with joy! We had a wonderful conversation, passed all the interview rounds, and before I knew it, I was stepping into the studio’s premises, ready to meet the brilliant designers and embark on thrilling projects that would expand.🧿
One piece of advice to all the freshers out there: never let rejection define your journey. It’s crucial to remember that rejection is not the end; it’s simply a stepping stone on the path to success. Instead of dwelling on setbacks, focus on continuous self-improvement. Hone your skills, refine your craft, and trust that the right opportunity will present itself when the time is right.
In this pursuit, don’t make money your sole motivation. Instead, strive to become capable and exceptional in your chosen field. When you dedicate yourself to constant growth and mastery, financial rewards will naturally follow. Remember, it’s the journey of personal and professional development that truly matters in the end.
